Which Florida course do you need?

What's your situation?

A ticket takes BDI; a cell-phone ticket in a school or work zone takes WCD. A first license takes DETS under 18, TLSAE at 18 or older. F.S. §322.1615 (under 18) and §322.095 (18 and older) verified

Florida Traffic School for Tickets

Got a traffic ticket? These courses can help. Have points withheld from your record, or meet a court order. All online, at your own pace. We do not offer the 8-hour Intermediate or 12-hour ADI courses a judge can order; those need another provider. Not sure what your ticket costs in points? The Florida points guide has the values and the suspension tiers. Court or clerk said “defensive driving”? That is the BDI course by its everyday name: Florida defensive driving course. Searching for a Florida driving class for a ticket, or a Florida driving school for a ticket? Both mean traffic school, and BDI is the course.

Florida Traffic School and Driving Course FAQ

What is the Florida BDI course?

The Basic Driver Improvement (BDI) course is Florida's 4-hour online traffic school. You take it to keep points off your driving record after a ticket, or to satisfy a court or FLHSMV requirement. Points are withheld from your record; the ticket itself is not dismissed. It's approved statewide and fully online.

What is the Florida TLSAE course?

TLSAE stands for Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education. Florida requires this 4-hour course before your first driver's license if you are 18 or older. Under 18? You take the 6-hour DETS course instead. Under 21 and suspended for a blood alcohol level of .02 to .05? You also need TLSAE to apply for a hardship license, a limited license for work or school.

What is the Florida DETS course?

DETS stands for Driver Education and Traffic Safety. It's a 6-hour online course required for first-time drivers in Florida between ages 14½ and 17. After completing DETS, teens must also pass the Class E Knowledge Exam before receiving their learner's license.

Can I take the Florida permit test online?

Yes — drivers under 18 can take the Class E Knowledge Exam online through our state-approved system. You get three attempts, 100 practice questions, road sign flashcards, and the Florida Driver's Handbook included. Adults 18+ must take the exam in person at an FLHSMV office or tax collector service center.

What's the difference between DETS and TLSAE?

DETS is for teens (14½–17) getting a learner's license. TLSAE is for adults (18+) getting their first Florida driver's license. They cover similar traffic safety content but are separate state-approved courses for different age groups — you take one or the other, not both.

What is the Florida Wireless Communications Device course?

This is a 90-minute course for drivers ticketed for using a cell phone in a school crossing, school zone, or work zone. It's less common than BDI. If your ticket was for cell phone use outside those locations, BDI is the course you need — check your citation to confirm.

How quickly will I get my certificate?

Certificates are issued the same day you complete the course and pass the final exam. For BDI, we file your completion with FLHSMV, usually the moment you finish (within 48 hours if it has to be filed manually), and FLHSMV passes it to your court within 24–48 hours.

Wherever you're headed, it's handled.

Every course above is Florida state-approved. Pick yours and start in minutes.
