Defensive Driving & Your Insurance

Can a defensive driving course lower your insurance?

Sometimes — and it’s your insurer’s call, not ours. In Texas and Pennsylvania, many insurers discount a voluntary defensive driving course. In other states the course does something different: it keeps a ticket’s points, or the ticket itself, away from your record. Where you drive decides which, and your insurer decides what it’s worth. Call them before you enroll.

No court, no ticket needed for the discount path — enroll, finish, send the certificate.

Your state, your mechanism

What does the course do for your insurance in each state?

Every mechanism above is checked against the state’s own laws and agencies. Each state page runs on the same sourced facts.

Call your insurer first

Ask whether they discount an approved course, how much, and for how long. Their answer is the only one that counts.

Finish, then send the certificate

Your certificate downloads the moment you pass. Send it the way your insurer asks — PDF, app, or agent — and keep a copy.

Discounts expire

Some insurers ask for the course again every three years to keep the discount going. Put a reminder on it.

Insurance discount FAQ

Does a defensive driving course lower my car insurance?

It can, in states where insurers give a discount for a voluntary course. Your own insurer has to agree. Texas and Pennsylvania are the two where that is common. Idaho's transportation department lists it as a possibility. In our other states, the course protects your driving record instead. That is different from a discount. Call your insurer before you enroll. Ask if they discount an approved course, how much, and for how long.

How much can a defensive driving course lower insurance?

Your insurer decides. In Texas and Pennsylvania, each insurer sets its own amount for a voluntary course, and how long it lasts. We never quote a percentage, because it is not ours to promise. One number is written into law: Pennsylvania's mature-driver discount of at least 5 percent. That comes from a separate PennDOT program for drivers 55 and over. Our course is not part of it.

Do I need a ticket to take the course for a discount?

No. The insurance path is voluntary — no court, no citation, no permission needed. You enroll, finish the course, download your certificate, and send it to your insurer. Where a course also handles a ticket, that's a separate path with its own rules, deadlines and eligibility, and the same certificate can serve both.

Which certificate do I send my insurer?

The same certificate of completion you download the moment you finish. Your insurer tells you how they want it — most take a PDF by email or through their app or agent. Keep a copy. Some insurers ask for the course again every three years to keep the discount going.

Will the course keep my rates from going up after a ticket?

That is record protection. It works differently from a discount. In Michigan, pass the course within 60 days of your notice. The Department of State then keeps the points off your record. It also does not share the violation with your insurer. In Arizona, a dismissed citation never reaches a regular (non-commercial) driver's record. In Florida, choosing BDI keeps the points off your record. In Missouri, the points never go on, but the conviction can still show. Whether any of that changes your premium is up to your insurer, not the state.

I'm 55 or older. Is this the mature driver discount course?

Not in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania's mature-driver discount — at least 5 percent, required of every insurer — comes from a specific PennDOT-approved program for drivers 55 and over, and our Pennsylvania course is not that program. If that discount is what you're after, ask your insurer which providers qualify. In other states, ask your insurer whether age-based discounts exist and what course they accept.

What does the course cost?

Flat, and the price on the page matches checkout to the penny. Texas is $25, Pennsylvania $24.95, Idaho $19.95. Every course includes the certificate you'll send your insurer. Nothing is added at checkout.

My state isn't listed. Can you still help?

Our courses are state-specific, and an insurer decides which courses it recognizes. So we only sell where we can tell you exactly what you're getting. If your state isn't here, start with your insurer: ask whether they discount a defensive driving course, and which providers they accept.

Your insurer has the answer. Your state has the course.

Seven states, each with its real mechanism spelled out. Every course is priced flat, and checkout matches the page to the penny.
