Drivers ed, answered
Drivers ed online FAQ
Can you take drivers ed online?
In Florida — where our drivers-ed courses live — yes, start to finish. The state-required course is fully online. Your completion is filed electronically with FLHSMV. And teens 14½-17 can even take the official permit exam online with a parent supervising. In another state? Your state's licensing agency sets its own rules. We'd rather point you to it than sell you a course that doesn't count where you live.
Is drivers ed required in Florida?
Yes, for every first-time driver — but which course depends on age. Teens 14½-17 must complete the 6-hour Driver Education and Traffic Safety (DETS) course before applying for a learner's license. Adults 18 and older take the 4-hour TLSAE (Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education) course instead. Both are ours. Both are fully online, and both are filed with FLHSMV for you.
How much does online drivers ed cost?
DETS is $29.95 and TLSAE is $27.95 — flat, all fees included, no surprises at checkout. The official Class E Knowledge Exam is $44.95 with all three online attempts included. And the DETS + exam bundle at $65.95 is the cheapest way for a teen to do both.
Can I take the permit test online too?
In Florida, teens 14½-17 can take the real thing — the official 50-question Class E Knowledge Exam — online, with a parent or legal guardian supervising the whole session. You need 80% (40 correct) within 60 minutes. Results are filed with FLHSMV the moment you finish. Adults 18+ must test in person at a driver license or tax collector office. Our permit-test hub has the full picture, including the free 20-question practice test.
What order do I do everything in?
For a Florida teen: DETS course first, then the Class E Knowledge Exam, then the license office visit. At the office, bring the Parent Proctoring Form. A parent signs it after the exam, in front of a notary or the driver license examiner. Take a quick vision and hearing screening, and pay the state's license fee. Then walk out with the learner's permit. (Teens can start DETS at 14½; Florida requires you to be 15 to apply for the permit itself.) Our free Teen Driver License Guide walks every step, with the documents you'll need.
Do you offer drivers ed outside Florida?
Not today — and we won't pretend otherwise. Our other states' courses are ticket and point courses (traffic school), not new-driver education. If you're a new driver outside Florida, start with your state licensing agency's site. It's the right place to find approved providers.
Is there a free way to study first?
Yes, two. The free Florida permit practice test has 20 questions with instant answers. No signup. It shows you what the real exam feels like. The free Teen Driver License Guide lays out the whole path to your Class E license. It lists the deadlines and the documents. Start free. Pay only when you’re ready for the course or the real exam.
