Defensive Driving, State-Approved in 6 States, 100% Online
Defensive driving course online: what it does in your state
A defensive driving course is 4 to 8 hours of crash-avoidance and traffic-law review, taken online. In six of our seven states, the state approves the course and sets its length. What finishing it does for you depends on the state. Arizona and Texas: an eligible ticket can be dismissed. Florida, Michigan, and Missouri: points stay off your record. Idaho: 3 points come off. Pennsylvania does not approve online traffic school, but some insurers may give a discount. Same course family, seven different jobs. Pick your state below to see yours.

How long is defensive driving?
Six of these states set the minimum. Pennsylvania sets none for this course. Our Missouri course is 5 units with an open-book final. If a course promises fewer hours than your state requires, check the state’s approved list before you pay.
Class, course, same thing
Is a defensive driving class different from a defensive driving course?
Courts and states use both words. “Class” sounds like a room with chairs. In all seven states we serve, our course is online and self-paced. Six states approve it. Pennsylvania has no approval program; a court there accepts it with the judge’s permission.
Two classroom programs are the exception, and neither one is this course. Arizona’s Traffic Survival School is ordered by the MVD and taught in person. Idaho’s Alive at 25 is a classroom program a court can name on its own. If your order names one of those, an online course will not stand in for it.
Names are the other place this gets muddled. “Traffic school,” “defensive driving,” “driver improvement,” “driving safety course” and “traffic safety course” all point here. The exception is Idaho. There, a city Traffic Safety Course is a separate municipal program, offered when your citation is issued. This course is not it.

Defensive driving course FAQ
What the course is, how long it takes, what it costs, and what it can and can’t do for a ticket — state by state.

What is a defensive driving course?
Defensive driving means driving to avoid a crash, even when another driver makes a mistake. The course is a 4 to 8 hour refresher on crash avoidance, traffic law, and safe habits. Many states give it legal weight. In Arizona and Texas, it can dismiss an eligible ticket. In Florida, Michigan, and Missouri, it keeps points off your record. In Idaho, it takes off points you already have. In Pennsylvania, it can qualify you for an insurer's discount program. Same family of course everywhere. What it does for you depends on your state.
How long is a defensive driving course?
Four to eight hours. Where a state runs the program, the state sets the length, not the school. Four hours: Arizona, Florida, and Michigan. Six hours: Texas and Idaho. Eight hours: Missouri. Pennsylvania sets no length for this course, and ours there is 4 hours. Every course here is self-paced. The hours can be one sitting or a week of lunch breaks, and your progress saves as you go.
Is defensive driving the same thing as traffic school?
In practice, yes. "Traffic school," "defensive driving," "driver improvement," and "driving safety course" are different states' names for the same idea, and "traffic safety course" is what a lot of drivers type into a search box. Texas officially calls it a driving safety course. Florida's is Basic Driver Improvement. Michigan's is the Basic Driver Improvement Course. Missouri's is the Driver Improvement Program. One of those names is already taken: Idaho's city Traffic Safety Course is a separate municipal program, offered when your citation is issued, and this course is not it. What matters isn't the name. It's what your state's version legally does. Each state page spells that out. How the online course itself works — devices, exams, who files your completion — lives on our online traffic school page.
Do I have to attend a defensive driving class in person?
No. In all seven states we serve, our course is online. Six states approve it, and Pennsylvania has no approval program. It is self-paced, and you finish it on any device. Two named classroom programs are the exception, and neither one is this course. Arizona's Traffic Survival School is ordered by the MVD and taught in person. Idaho's Alive at 25 is a classroom program a court can require by name. If your paperwork names one of those, an online course will not stand in for it.
Will defensive driving dismiss my ticket?
In Arizona and Texas, it can, each by its own path. In Arizona, the court’s diversion program dismisses an eligible citation when you finish. In Texas, you ask the court for permission first. Once the court says yes, you finish the course and turn in your papers on time. The court can then dismiss the ticket. In Florida, Michigan, Missouri, and Idaho, the course protects your record instead. It does not dismiss the ticket. In Pennsylvania, no state rule ties the course to a ticket. A judge may allow it, case by case. Our ticket-dismissal guide walks through each state’s steps.
Does defensive driving lower your insurance?
Sometimes, in two different ways. First, the course can keep a violation off your record in the ticket states. Then your insurer has nothing new to rate. Second, some insurers run their own discount programs for finishing a course. Pennsylvania is where we see this most. Call your insurer first and confirm your policy qualifies before you buy. We never promise a discount; your insurer decides. Our insurance-discount guide covers each state.
How much does a defensive driving course cost?
State by state and always flat — $24.95 (Florida BDI), $19.95 (Idaho), $19.95 (Missouri), $24.95 (Pennsylvania), $39.95 (Arizona), $39.95 (Michigan). The page price is the checkout price. Texas is $25 — the lowest price Texas law allows any school to charge. Arizona adds state and court fees on top. They're the same at every school, broken out on our Arizona cost guide.
Is there a free defensive driving course online?
Not one your court or your state will count. Texas settles it in law: $25 is the lowest price any school may charge there, so a free Texas course cannot be the state-approved one. In the six other states we serve the course is a paid product too, priced flat and listed above. Where "free" usually turns up is the first half of a checkout — free to start, then a processing fee, a state fee, and a charge to release the certificate you already earned. That total is the number worth comparing. Ours is the one on the page: it is what you pay at checkout, your certificate is included, and retakes cost nothing.
Can I take a defensive driving course voluntarily, without a ticket?
You can — the course content is the same. Some drivers take it for an insurer's discount program, or just as a refresher. Two honest notes. The legal effects (dismissal, point protection) only apply when there's a ticket to attach them to. And if an insurance discount is your goal, check with your insurer that a voluntary completion counts before you buy.
