The Certificate Truth

Florida traffic school certificate submission — who files what, exactly.

One question decides everything: did you elect the course, or did a judge order it? Elected is the common case. We e-file your completion with FLHSMV, and the state then tells your court for you — typically the next business day. Nothing to print, nothing to mail. Court-ordered means the delivery is yours. Here are both paths, with no fine print buried.

  • The certificate downloads instantly, free — no certificate fees, ever.
  • Your citation says which case you are. The clerk can confirm in minutes.

Elected cases only. Not sure you elected? How to elect shows what an election looks like, and the eligibility checks confirm you could. Court-ordered? The certificate is yours to deliver — the second column below.

Elected vs. Court-Ordered

How is a Florida traffic school certificate submitted?

Elected — you chose it Court-ordered — a judge imposed it
Who chose it You, to keep points off your record A judge, as part of a penalty
Who files it We e-file your completion with FLHSMV You, directly with the court
When the court hears From FLHSMV, within 24 to 48 hours When you submit the certificate
What your certificate is for A receipt — the filing is electronic The filing itself, by the order's deadline
Points Not assessed for the eligible violation May still be assessed
The one question that decides what you do with the certificate: did you elect the course, or did a judge order it? Elected is the common case, and the filing is ours. Court-ordered means the delivery is yours, and points may still be assessed. F.S. §318.14(9) verified
Either way — respect the deadline.

Your completion deadline is on your election paperwork or court order. It belongs to the clerk. Trouble? Call the clerk before the date, not after.

What You Actually Get

How do you read your Florida certificate of completion?

It downloads the moment you pass, it is free, and you can download it again as often as you like. Here is the same document with its fields labeled — blank, because yours is the only one that matters.

  1. The name your license carries This is the name we report to FLHSMV, so it has to match the license the state has on file — not a nickname, not a shortened middle name.
  2. Which course, and how long Elected traffic school in Florida is the 4-hour Basic Driver Improvement course. A judge's order may name a different one; read the order before you enroll.
  3. The date you finished That is what your deadline is measured against — not the date your court hears about it.
  4. The state certificate number The number a clerk can look you up by if a question ever comes up. It is on your certificate page in your account, beside the download.
  5. Our school license number FLHSMV licenses the school, and that license is what makes a certificate count. A course from an unlicensed school is not traffic school, however it is advertised.

Certificate & submission FAQ

Do I have to submit my traffic school certificate to the court?

For elected traffic school — the most common case — no. We e-file your completion with FLHSMV, usually the moment you finish our course. It reaches your designated court within 24 to 48 hours. You don't mail anything or go to the courthouse. If a judge specifically ordered the course as a penalty, that's the exception. Court-ordered students submit their certificate to the court directly.

How do I know if I'm elected or court-ordered?

Elected means you chose the course after a ticket to keep points off your record. You told the Clerk of Court you were electing. Court-ordered means a judge imposed the course as part of a penalty. Points may still be assessed, and the automatic notification doesn't apply. Check the back of your citation or your court paperwork, or call your county Clerk of Court. The answer changes what you do with the certificate — it's worth thirty seconds of certainty.

When does my court find out I finished?

For elected cases, we e-file your completion with FLHSMV, usually the moment you finish. It reaches your designated court within 24 to 48 hours. Your deadline goes by the day you finish, not the day your court hears.

Do I still need my certificate if the filing is automatic?

Keep it. It downloads instantly, and it's free. It's your personal proof of completion if a question ever comes up. But for elected cases its job is a receipt, not a filing. The record that satisfies your court flows electronically, with your certificate as backup.

I'm court-ordered. How do I get the certificate to the court?

Download it the moment you finish — free and instant. Then deliver it the way your court directed. The order or your court paperwork says how, and the clerk's office can confirm. That step is yours. For court-ordered cases, no electronic filing substitutes for putting the certificate in the court's hands by your deadline.

How do I check that my completion arrived?

Two places can show it. FLHSMV's Traffic School Completion Check confirms the state has your completion. Your county clerk's online case search, where the county has one, shows what the court received. Not there after three business days? Call us at 1-888-406-1726, then the clerk.

Does the certificate cost extra?

No. The certificate and the electronic filing are included in the $24.95 course price. No processing fees, no certificate fees, and no delivery charges at the end. If a school quotes a separate "certificate fee" on top of its course price, that is a charge this one does not have.

What if I miss my completion deadline?

Call your county Clerk of Court immediately. The deadline is theirs, and so is any flexibility. The number is on your citation and your election paperwork. What you shouldn't do is finish silently late and hope. Talking to the clerk before the deadline passes is always the stronger position.

What happens to the points once my court is notified?

For a properly elected case, adjudication is withheld. In plain words: the court does not enter a conviction, and no points go on your license. The certificate pipeline is how the court learns you held up your end. That is the whole point of electing.

Finish the course. The paperwork mostly finishes itself.
