Before you pay

Do I qualify? Three questions — about 15 seconds.

Idaho has strict rules about who can take this course. We'd rather tell you now, before you pay.

1. Do you hold a commercial driver's license (CDL)?

This course reduces points. It does not remove convictions from your record. And it cannot lift a suspension that has already begun. Want the whole point system explained — the schedule, the thresholds, the fine print? Read the Idaho points guide. Wondering what the ticket itself costs? Idaho speeding ticket cost, fine by fine.

Why one price

Some schools sell a low price.
Then sell you back the rest.

Audio narration as an add-on. Certificates with "processing." Coupon codes that reset the same "sale" every day. Exams you can fail three times — then buy the course again. We priced all of it at zero, once.

The games

"Big sale, ends tonight"

  • + coupon codes you're expected to hunt for.
  • + audio read-along, sold separately.
  • + three exam attempts, then re-purchase.
  • = a total you didn't sign up for.

The HTS price

$19.95 — flat, final

  • Course, audio, exam, retakes, certificate.
  • Coupons needed: none — this is the price.
  • Checkout matches this page, to the penny.

How it works

How Idaho defensive driving works: who does what

  1. You Confirm you are eligible One course every three years and the citation paid first. Idaho's rules are written for regular licenses; if you hold a CDL, check with the ITD before enrolling. The 15-second check above sorts it out. Before you pay
  2. You Take the 6-hour course online Five units on any device. Log out any time and your progress saves — one sitting or ten. 6 hours, any pace
  3. You Pass the open-book final exam Twenty questions, 80% to pass. Miss it? Retake it free, as many times as it takes. Free retakes
  4. Highway Traffic School We issue your certificate the moment you pass Free, instant, attached to your completion email — with the ITD's address and a pre-written email ready to send. Instant
  5. You Email the certificate to the ITD — or deliver it to your court In Idaho you send it yourself. One email to ddc@itd.idaho.gov does it. Court-ordered or officer-offered? Deliver it to the court named on your citation by its deadline. About two minutes
  6. The ITD (or your court) The ITD takes 3 points off your record A flat 3 points come off your count, once every three years. The conviction itself stays. Idaho law has no statewide program that drops a ticket for taking a course. After the ITD receives it
Who does what to take 3 points off an Idaho driving record. You confirm you are eligible and take the 6-hour course online. We issue the certificate the moment you pass the open-book exam. You email that certificate to the ITD yourself, or deliver it to the court that offered the course. The ITD removes 3 points from your count. IDAPA 39.02.71.400 verified

You send your certificate to the ITD yourself. The ITD takes it by email, so we made that step easy: the ITD's own address and a pre-written email, waiting in your completion email and in our two-minute submission guide. Under 25 and told to take a course? Alive at 25 is a different program — the guide explains which one you need.

Questions, in the order people ask them

Idaho defensive driving FAQ

Is this course approved by the State of Idaho?

Yes. Our course is approved by the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD). You can verify us on the ITD's published list of approved defensive driving schools.

How many points does the course remove?

Up to 3 points from your Idaho driving record. It reduces points only. It does not erase the conviction itself, and it can't undo a suspension that has already started.

Do you send my certificate to the ITD or the court?

No — in Idaho, you submit it yourself. The ITD publishes one way to do it: you email it. Your certificate downloads free the moment you pass. We give you step-by-step submission instructions, so it takes about two minutes. If a court or officer sent you here, you'll show the certificate to the court for credit.

How much does it cost — really?

$19.95 total, including audio narration, the exam, unlimited retakes, and your certificate. There are no processing fees, no certificate fees, and no other charges.

How often can I take it?

Once every three years, measured from the date you completed your last defensive driving or traffic safety education course.

Can I take it with a CDL?

Idaho's rules are written for regular licenses; if you hold a CDL, check with the ITD before enrolling. The ITD says a defensive driving course has no effect on any CDL disqualification, so ask the ITD whether it will take points off your record.

How long does it take?

Six hours — the minimum required by Idaho law. You can start and stop as often as you like; the course saves your place automatically.

Is there a defensive driving class near me in Idaho?

You don't need one nearby. The course is online and ITD-approved, so it works from anywhere in Idaho: Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Twin Falls, Coeur d'Alene or any other town.

What's the final exam like?

Twenty questions, open book, 80% to pass. Retakes are free and unlimited.

When do I get my certificate?

Instantly. It's generated the moment you pass and is free to download, print, or save. Need a certified copy later? You can order one from your course history page.

Is "defensive driving" the same as "accident prevention"?

Yes. Idaho's rules use both names for the same course. A traffic safety education program is different. That is a class a city may offer when an officer writes the ticket, and it is not what we offer. If your ticket names a city class, ask that city which courses it accepts. Both share one limit: one point reduction every three years.

Is this Idaho traffic school?

Yes, in everyday terms. Idaho's rules call it a defensive driving or accident prevention course; most drivers call it traffic school. If a court or officer offered you traffic school, this is the course. If your court set its own rules, check with the court first.

Is this the same as Alive at 25 or drivers ed?

No. Alive at 25 is a separate program for young drivers. Drivers ed is for new drivers earning a license. This course is for licensed drivers. Take it to remove points after a ticket. You can also take it because a court or officer offered traffic school. Some drivers take it to ask their insurer for a discount.

Do I need an Idaho driver license to get the points off?

Yes. The ITD recognizes traffic class completion certificates for Idaho-licensed drivers only, and the 3-point reduction comes off an Idaho driving record. If your license is from another state, the course can't reduce points on an Idaho record you don't have. Check with your own state's licensing agency about what it accepts.

Does the course lower my car insurance in Idaho?

Maybe. The ITD's own wording is a 3-point reduction "and/or" an insurance discount. The discount belongs to your insurer, not Idaho, and each insurer sets its own rules. Call your insurance company and ask before you enroll. Don't count on a discount until your insurer confirms it.

Two questions with their own pages: what an Idaho speeding ticket costs and how Alive at 25 differs from this course.
