Before you pay

Am I eligible? 30-second check.

Texas lets most drivers use defensive driving to dismiss one ticket every 12 months. You are eligible if all of these are true. Tap each one that applies:

Looks like you’re eligible ✓ One more step: ask your court for permission before you start. It’s usually a checkbox when you respond to your citation.

⚠️ Court permission comes first. Take the course without it and the court can reject your completion. When in doubt, call your court — the number’s on your citation.

Can’t check every box? You may still have options — call your court, or email support@highwaytrafficschool.com and we’ll help you figure it out. You can also text or call 1-888-406-1726, Mon–Sat 7am–7pm PT. Want the reasoning behind each rule? Read the full eligibility guide. And if you’re counting points — don’t: Texas repealed its point system in 2019.

  6. Your court + TDLR The court verifies your completion It matches your certificate to the TDLR record and handles the dismissal under its own rules — that decision is the court's. After you deliver

Questions, in the order people ask them

Texas defensive driving FAQ

Is a Texas driving safety course the same as defensive driving?

Yes. "Driving safety course" is the name TDLR uses in the regulations. "Defensive driving course," "defensive driving class" and "driver safety course" are what drivers call it. Same six-hour course, same TDLR approval, same certificate your court accepts. Ours is TDLR-approved under License CP994.

How much does the Texas defensive driving course cost?

The course costs $25 — total. Texas law sets $25 as the minimum price for any driving safety course. We add nothing at checkout: no processing fees, no certificate fees, no surprises. Your court charges its own costs, and the court sets that amount. Optional audio narration is $6.99 extra if you want it.

Do I need the court's permission before I start?

Yes. Answer your citation and ask for defensive driving first. It is usually a checkbox on the citation response form. If you take the course before the court says yes, the court can reject it.

How long do I have to finish the course?

Your court sets the deadline when it grants permission, and Texas law allows a 90-day period. Calendar it the day you enroll. The course itself takes 6 hours, and you can split it across as many sittings as you like.

Who sends my certificate to the court?

You do. Texas courts require you to deliver the signed certificate by your deadline. We file your completion with the TDLR electronically within 48 hours so your court can verify it.

Am I eligible to dismiss my ticket with this course?

Most Texas drivers are, once every 12 months. You need a Texas driver license or permit. Active-duty military members, their spouses and their dependent children are the exception. You're not eligible if any of these apply: you hold a CDL. You were cited in a construction zone with workers present. You were going 25+ mph over the limit, or 95 mph or more. You had no insurance at the time. The charge involves a hit-and-run or passing a school bus. Or you finished a course for a ticket in the 12 months before this ticket.

How long is the course, and is there a final exam?

6 hours — the length Texas law requires — split into 11 short units. Each unit ends with a two-question quiz with unlimited free retakes. There is no comprehensive final exam.

Do I need a cell phone?

Yes. Texas asks us to confirm it's really you taking the course, and we do that with a code texted to your cell phone: once when you start and a few times during the course. Any cell phone that can receive texts works, and you can take the course itself on any device with a browser.

Can I fail?

Realistically, no — that's the design. Quizzes are two questions each and you can retake them free, unlimited times, until you pass. Finish the units and the certificate is yours.

Do I also need my driving record for the court?

Yes, in most cases. Texas law has you show the court your driving record along with your certificate. Courts call it a Type 3A record, and you order it from the Texas DPS. The law also asks for a short sworn statement. Follow the instructions your court gives you.

What if there's a typo on my certificate?

We'll fix it and file it again with the TDLR for $10.00, the fee for any change to a filed completion. So triple-check your name and details at enrollment.

Does this course work for an insurance discount?

Many Texas insurers discount premiums when you complete an approved defensive driving course voluntarily. Each insurer sets its own amount and how long it lasts. Call yours first to confirm. Then send them the same certificate you'd give a court.

Is Highway Traffic School approved by the TDLR?

Yes. We're a licensed Texas course provider — TDLR License CP994 — and the course is approved for use statewide. You can verify our license with the TDLR.

Is this course approved by the Texas Education Agency (TEA)?

No, and it does not need to be. Texas moved this program from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to the TDLR, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. TDLR approval is what the law requires and what your court checks. Our course is TDLR-approved under License CP994.

When do I get my certificate?

Instantly. It's emailed and available to download the moment you finish the course, free. Sign it, then get it to your court by your deadline.

Ready? Your deadline isn’t waiting.
