How the Florida Basic Driver Improvement (BDI) course works
One deadline is yours: tell the Clerk of Court you're electing within 30 days of the ticket. Everything after the course is ours. Most traffic schools tell you to print your certificate and mail it to the clerk. Not here — for elected traffic school, the most common situation, we e-file with FLHSMV, usually the moment you finish, and it reaches your court within 24 to 48 hours. County by county, the election itself is covered in how to elect traffic school in Florida.
- Day 0 Ticket issued Day 0: the citation is issued and the 30-day election window opens.
- Day 30 Election deadline Day 30: the last day to tell the Clerk of Court you are electing traffic school and pay the civil penalty.
- Day 90 Completion due Your county sets this date when you elect — it is on your election paperwork, commonly 60 to 90 days out. Finish before it.
- Take the 4-hour course any time — we file it, usually the moment you finish (day 0–90)
Notify your court
Tell the Clerk of Court on your citation that you are electing traffic school. Do it within 30 days of your ticket — that is the one deadline that is yours.
Pay your fine
Pay the civil penalty and any election fee. Your county sets the fee, and it goes to the court, not us. Electing an approved course may reduce the civil penalty by up to 18% under F.S. 318.14(9).
Complete the course
4 hours online, any device, at your own pace. Start, stop, and pick up where you left off — your progress saves automatically.
We file it
We e-file your completion with FLHSMV, usually the moment you finish. It reaches your court within 24 to 48 hours. Nothing to print, nothing to mail, no trip to the courthouse.
Nothing to print. Nothing to mail. No trip to the courthouse.
Court-ordered instead of elected? If a judge ordered the course as a specific penalty, it works differently. You'll submit your certificate to the court directly, and points may still apply. Not sure which is you? Check the back of your citation, or ask your county Clerk of Court before you enroll — the Clerk of Court guide has the numbers and what to ask. Who files what, case by case: the traffic school certificate guide.
$24.95. That's the whole price.
No processing fee at checkout. No "state certificate fee" hiding on the payment page. Some schools advertise one price, then add fees at checkout before you can finish enrolling. Ours is $24.95, and that's exactly what you'll pay.

What happens after you complete traffic school
BDI is Florida's defensive driving course. Finish it, and three lines on your record change for that ticket. Adjudication is withheld, which means no conviction is entered. No points are added. And the civil penalty may drop by up to 18%. The points shown below are Florida’s schedule for speeding 15 mph or less over the limit; the Florida points guide has the other values and the suspension tiers. Already suspended on points? The hardship license guide explains how to ask FLHSMV to keep driving for work and school.

The fine print. After you finish, your record shows adjudication withheld and no points. The fine cut is the clerk's to apply, not ours. Electing an approved course reduces the civil penalty by up to 18% under F.S. 318.14(9). And no court appearance: for elected cases, your court is told automatically.
Do you qualify for traffic school? Florida’s four checks
Four quick questions — see where you stand in ten seconds. Your county Clerk of Court always has the final say.
Was your ticket a non-criminal moving violation?
Speeding, failure to yield, improper lane change: most tickets qualify. Criminal charges and speeding 30 mph or more over the limit do not (F.S. 318.14(9)).
Is this your first traffic school election in the past 12 months?
Florida lets you elect BDI once in any 12-month window.
Do you have lifetime elections remaining?
Florida allows up to 8 traffic school elections in a lifetime.
Is your license a regular, non-commercial license?
CDL holders aren't eligible to elect traffic school for point avoidance.
Answer all four to see where you stand.
You likely qualify
All four checks point the right way. One deadline to remember: tell the Clerk of Court within 30 days of your citation that you're electing traffic school — that election comes first, the course comes after.

Based on your answers, you may not qualify this time. Your county Clerk of Court can confirm in minutes. If BDI isn't an option for this ticket, they'll tell you what is.
- You received a non-criminal moving violation — speeding under 30 mph over the limit, failure to yield, improper lane change, and the like.
- You haven't elected traffic school in the past 12 months.
- You have lifetime elections remaining — Florida allows up to 8.
- You notify the Clerk of Court within 30 days of your citation.
You're not eligible if…
- You hold a Commercial Driver License (CDL).
- You already elected traffic school in the past 12 months.
- You've used all 8 lifetime elections.
- You didn't notify the court within 30 days of your citation.
- Your citation was a criminal violation, not a non-criminal infraction.
- Your citation was for speeding 30 mph or more over the limit.
Unsure about your situation? Your county Clerk of Court can confirm eligibility before you enroll — or run the four checks in our traffic school eligibility guide.
Questions, in the order people ask them
Florida traffic school, answered
Do I have to submit my certificate to the court after I finish Florida traffic school?
For elected traffic school — the most common situation — no. We file your completion with FLHSMV electronically, usually the moment you finish. It reaches your court within 24 to 48 hours. You don't need to mail anything or go to the courthouse. If a judge ordered the course as a penalty (court-ordered, not elected), you'll submit your certificate to the court yourself. Who files what, case by case: the traffic school certificate guide.
How much does Florida traffic school cost?
Our Florida BDI course is $24.95, all-inclusive — the full 4-hour FLHSMV-approved course, electronic filing, and your certificate. No processing fees, no certificate fees, nothing added at checkout.
How many times can I take traffic school in Florida?
Once in any 12-month period, and up to 8 times in your lifetime (F.S. 318.14(9)). Number 8 is your last one. The full four checks are in the traffic school eligibility guide.
How long does the Florida BDI course take?
4 hours, as required by Florida law. Complete it in one sitting or across multiple sessions — your progress saves automatically.
Is this course accepted by all Florida courts?
Yes. We're FLHSMV-approved and accepted in all 67 Florida counties. Some providers on the FLHSMV list are approved for one county's citations only. We are not limited that way.
Is the Traffic Collision Avoidance Course (TCAC) the same as BDI?
Yes — TCAC is another name Florida uses for the same 4-hour FLHSMV-approved Basic Driver Improvement course, which is the course on this page. If your citation or election paperwork names a course, check the name against it, or ask your county Clerk of Court, before you enroll.
Can I take this course on my phone?
Yes — fully mobile-optimized for any smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop. No app download required.
What if I don't pass the final exam?
Retake it as many times as you need at no extra cost. It's open-book, multiple-choice, based on the course material.
Do I still have to pay my ticket fine if I take traffic school?
Yes. Traffic school keeps points off your record — it doesn't eliminate your fine. You'll still pay your ticket and any election fee. Electing an approved course may reduce your civil penalty by up to 18% (F.S. 318.14(9)); the clerk applies the reduction, not us.
Can CDL holders take traffic school in Florida?
No. Florida does not let CDL holders elect traffic school to keep points off (F.S. 318.14(9)). If you hold a Commercial Driver License, ask the clerk or an attorney what options you have. Buying a course will not change that.
Is Highway Traffic School a legitimate, approved provider?
Yes — fully FLHSMV-approved, serving over 116,000 drivers since 2014, accepted in all 67 counties. You can verify our approval on the FLHSMV website.
I got a ticket in a Florida county I don't live in. Can I still take this course?
Yes. Your county of residence doesn't matter for a Florida citation. We're accepted in all 67 counties, wherever your ticket was issued.
Ready to handle your ticket?
One course. One price. Your court gets notified automatically.
