Before you pay

Take this course if all of these are true

The state already checked most of this before mailing your letter. We would rather confirm now than refund you later.

  • You received an eligibility letter from the Michigan Department of State.
  • You're within 60 days of the date on that letter.
  • You hold a valid Michigan license — and don't hold a CDL.
  • You've never passed a Basic Driver Improvement Course before.

Your ticket must also be an eligible violation. That means issued in Michigan, not in a commercial vehicle, not a criminal offense, and worth 3 points or fewer. It also can't be one of the violations Michigan excludes outright. If the SOS mailed you the letter, you're almost certainly eligible — the state checks before it writes. Full details in the FAQ, or check the official SOS eligible-tickets list. Want every rule explained, including the edge cases? Read the full eligibility guide.

How it works

How the Michigan Basic Driver Improvement Course works

  1. Day 0 Your letter arrives Day 0: the Secretary of State mails your eligibility notice by first-class mail. The date on that letter starts the clock, and the “complete by” date is printed on it.
  2. Day 60 Deadline — no extensions Day 60: your completion must be with the Secretary of State. Michigan law does not allow extensions, so a missed window puts the points and the violation on your record.
  • Register in minutes and take the 4-hour course any time in the window — you can finish it in one sitting (day 0–60)

Michigan BDIC FAQ

What is the Michigan Basic Driver Improvement Course (BDIC)?

The BDIC is the State of Michigan Basic Driver Improvement Course: an optional, state-approved 4-hour course for Michigan drivers. It's for drivers who receive an eligibility notice from the Department of State after a qualifying ticket. Pass it within 60 days of your notice and two things happen. The state will not enter the points on your driving record. And it won't share the ticket information with your insurance company. Highway Traffic School is an approved Michigan BDIC sponsor, and our course is $39.95, fully online.

Am I eligible for the BDIC?

The Department of State decides, and eligible drivers get a letter in the mail. In general, you qualify if all of these are true. You hold a valid, non-commercial Michigan license. You had two or fewer points on your record when the ticket was issued. The ticket is a civil infraction worth three points or fewer. You weren't driving a commercial vehicle. And you've never passed a BDIC before. Some tickets are excluded no matter the points. The SOS publishes the full list of eligible tickets. Check the rules and that list on the Department of State's BDIC eligibility page at michigan.gov/bdic.

What does passing the course actually do?

The points never go on your driving record. The ticket shows at zero points. The Department of State also keeps the violation away from your insurance company. The ticket itself stays on file, and any fine or court cost is still owed.

How long do I have to finish?

60 days from the date on your Department of State notice. The exact deadline is printed on your letter. You must enroll, complete, and pass within that window.

My deadline is very close — can I still finish in time?

Yes. You can register and start immediately, and the course takes four hours. The Department of State goes by the day you finish, not the day we file, so finishing on your deadline day still counts. We file your completion electronically within 48 hours. Questions first? Email support@highwaytrafficschool.com, or text or call 1-888-406-1726, Mon–Sat, 7am–7pm PT.

Can I get an extension?

No. Michigan law doesn't allow the Department of State to grant extensions. If you miss your deadline, the points and violation go on your record. They also become available to your insurance company.

How many times can I take the BDIC?

You can only pass the BDIC once in your lifetime. Within your 60-day window you can attempt the exam as many times as you need. But once you've passed a BDIC, you can't use the BDIC program again for a future ticket. (If you missed a previous 60-day window without ever passing, the state may find you eligible again for a later ticket.)

What if I don't pass the final exam?

You will, eventually. The final is 25 questions, open book, 70% to pass, and retakes are free and unlimited.

Do you send my completion to the state, or do I?

We do. When you pass, we electronically submit your completion to the Michigan Department of State. It's free, with nothing for you to mail. You also get a free downloadable certificate for your records.

I have a CDL. Can I take this course?

No. If you hold a CDL (a commercial driver's license), you can't take the Michigan BDIC. That is true even if you got the ticket in your personal car. The same rule applies if you were ticketed while driving a commercial vehicle.

How do I know Highway Traffic School is legit?

Check us against the official source. The Michigan Department of State publishes a list of approved BDIC sponsors, and we're on it. You'll find the link in the eligibility section above.

How do I pick the best Michigan BDIC online course?

Start with the Secretary of State's approved-sponsor list; a course that isn't on it won't count. Then compare what's included: electronic filing with the Department of State, the certificate, retakes, and whether the price is all-in.

My ticket carries zero points. Is the course still worth taking?

Often, yes. Insurance companies evaluate violations under their own point system. So even a zero-point ticket can raise your rates if they see it. Pass the BDIC and the state won't disclose the ticket to your insurer at all.

A court ordered me to take a BDIC. Does that keep the points off?

Not by itself. Under Michigan law, a court can order you to complete a BDIC whether or not you're eligible for point avoidance. A court-ordered completion keeps the points off your record only if you're independently eligible. That means you also received the Department of State eligibility letter and meet the program's requirements. If you're taking the course by court order, check your paperwork or ask the court what your completion does for you.
