The Basics

What Is the Florida TLSAE Course?

Florida's Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education course — TLSAE for short — is the state's required 4-hour course. It's for first-time drivers age 18 and older.

You may also hear it called the Drug and Alcohol course, the DATA course, the 4 hour course, or the first-time driver course. They're all the same course. Since August 1, 2025, TLSAE counts only for drivers 18 and older (Sections 322.095 and 322.1615, Florida Statutes). If you're under 18, you must complete the 6-hour DETS course instead.

Searching for the "Florida drug and alcohol test"? That's this course too. The "test" is the final exam you take at the end of the course. Pass it, and you've met the requirement.

One Honest Price

$27.95. That's the Whole Price.

Some schools advertise a low price. Then they stack on a "processing fee," a "state assessment fee," and a charge for your own certificate. We don't. And there's a reason no approved course is free: Florida law makes every school collect a $3 state assessment fee from every student who takes it (Section 322.095(4), Florida Statutes). That $3 is already inside the number above.

Do you need the TLSAE course?

  • If You're 18 or older and getting your first driver's license

  • If You're a new Florida resident with a valid out-of-state license

  • If You're under 21, reinstating on a hardship license

Florida TLSAE Course — Questions & Answers

What is a TLSAE course?

TLSAE stands for Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education. It's Florida's required 4-hour course covering traffic laws, safe driving, and how drugs and alcohol affect your ability to drive. First-time drivers 18 and older must complete it before applying for a Florida license.

Is TLSAE the same as the Florida drug and alcohol course or DATA course?

Yes. TLSAE, the Drug and Alcohol course, the DATA course, and the "first-time driver course" are all the same 4-hour requirement.

Is this the Florida drug and alcohol test?

The "test" people search for is the final exam at the end of this course. Complete the 4 hours, pass the exam, and the requirement is met.

Is this the Florida DMV drug and alcohol course?

Yes, it is the same course, and the test is its final exam. Florida's licensing agency is the FLHSMV; many people still say DMV. You take this course online, then visit a driver license office for the rest.

How long is the TLSAE course?

Four hours of course time, required by Florida law. You can split it into as many sessions as you want — your progress saves automatically.

How much does the TLSAE course cost?

$27.95 total at Highway Traffic School. That includes the course, the final exam, the $3.00 Florida state assessment fee, instant FLHSMV filing, and a free digital certificate. There are no hidden fees.

Is there a free 4-hour drug and alcohol course in Florida?

No. There is no free state-approved version, and Florida law is the reason. Section 322.095(4), Florida Statutes, makes every school collect a $3 fee from each student. The school sends that $3 to the state to get your certificate number. FLHSMV does not run a free course either. It approves providers and publishes the list. What can cost nothing is an exemption. Section 322.095(1) exempts you if you already hold a license from another state or country. It also exempts you if you passed a Department of Education driver ed course under s. 1003.48. That is a Florida high school class. Some county school board DELAP courses may count too. Ask your county school board before you pay anyone. If none of that is you, the course costs money. Our job is to make it one honest number: $27.95 total, with the $3 state fee inside, free unlimited retakes, and a free digital certificate.

Does the TLSAE certificate expire?

No. If you are 18 or older, Florida puts no expiration date on your TLSAE completion. It stays valid until you use it. The "one-year expiration" some websites mention applied only to drivers under 18. It covered teens who finished TLSAE before August 1, 2025, when Florida moved teens to DETS. The "90-day" claim you may see online does not apply to adult TLSAE completions.

I'm under 18. Can I take TLSAE?

No. Florida law changed on August 1, 2025 (§322.095, Florida Statutes). Drivers under 18 must complete the 6-hour DETS course instead. A TLSAE certificate will not count toward your learner's license. We offer the DETS course for $29.95. Side by side: TLSAE vs. DETS.

How many questions are on the TLSAE final exam?

The final exam has 40 multiple-choice questions. You need 80% — 32 correct answers — to pass. Retakes are free and unlimited, so missing the mark just means taking it again — you can't get locked out of finishing.

Do I need "Florida drug and alcohol test answers" to pass?

No — and here's why that search is a waste of your time. The final exam comes with unlimited free retakes. There's no way to fail your way out of the course. All 40 questions come directly from the course material you just covered. Answer keys floating around online are often outdated, or belong to another provider's exam entirely. And a completion that doesn't reflect real coursework puts your official FLHSMV record at risk. Four hours of honest effort gets you a legitimate completion, guaranteed. The long version: Florida drug and alcohol test answers — read this first.

Can I take the Class E Knowledge Exam online?

Not if you're 18 or older. Florida law requires adults to take the Class E Knowledge Exam in person at a driver license office. Only minors taking DETS have an online exam option. That's why our DETS + Class E Exam combo exists for teens.

How fast is my completion filed with the state?

Instantly. The moment our system generates your certificate, we send your completion to the FLHSMV electronically.

Do I get a copy of my certificate?

Yes — a digital download is free and available immediately. Want a printed copy mailed to you? That's $9.95 with free First-Class shipping.

What if the FLHSMV has an issue with my record?

Our optional Filing Confirmation ($16.95) verifies the state received and processed your completion. It also covers any record corrections at no extra charge. We normally charge $10.00 to change your information once it has been filed with the state.

Is Highway Traffic School approved by the State of Florida?

Yes. Highway Traffic School is fully approved by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV). You can verify our approval on the FLHSMV provider list. We've been serving Florida drivers since 2014, and more than 116,000 students have completed our courses.
