  1. An eight-sided (octagonal) traffic sign always means:

A blank eight-sided red traffic sign
    Show answer & why

C — Stop. The octagon is reserved for stop signs and nothing else, so you can recognize one by shape alone — even if it's faded or covered. Come to a complete stop at the stop line or crosswalk.

  2. A solid yellow line on your side of the center line means:

    Show answer & why

B — No passing on your side. A solid yellow line on your side means stay in your lane. A broken (dashed) yellow line is the one that allows passing when it's safe and clear.

  3. For drivers 21 and older, it is unlawful to drive with a blood alcohol level of:

    Show answer & why

A — 0.08%. Florida's legal limit for drivers 21 and older is a blood alcohol level of .08. Impairment starts well below the legal limit — and drivers under 21 face a much stricter standard (next question).

  4. A driver under 21 will have their license suspended for driving with a blood alcohol level of:

    Show answer & why

C — 0.02%. Florida has a zero-tolerance policy for drivers under 21: a blood alcohol level of .02 or higher — which can be a single drink — means an automatic license suspension.

  5. A flashing red traffic signal at an intersection means:

A traffic signal head with the top red lamp lit
    Show answer & why

B — Treat it like a stop sign. Flashing red = come to a complete stop, yield, then proceed when clear. (A flashing yellow signal is the one that means slow down and proceed with caution.)

  6. You're on a two-way road with no median. A school bus ahead stops with its red lights flashing. You must:

    Show answer & why

D — Stop, both directions. On a two-way road with no median, traffic both ways must stop for a school bus loading or unloading. The one exception is a divided highway. That means a raised median, a barrier, or at least 5 feet of unpaved space. Only then may oncoming traffic continue, with caution.

  7. Unless a sign says otherwise, turning right at a red light is:

    Show answer & why

B — Stop first, then turn when clear. Right on red is legal in Florida after a complete stop, yielding to pedestrians and cross traffic — unless a "NO TURN ON RED" sign prohibits it.

  8. Two vehicles reach a four-way stop at the same time. Who goes first?

    Show answer & why

A — Yield to the right. When two vehicles arrive at the same time, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right. Otherwise at a four-way stop, the first to arrive (and fully stop) goes first.

  9. Florida law requires you to begin signaling a turn at least:

    Show answer & why

C — 100 feet. Signal at least 100 feet before turning. At driving speed that's only a couple of seconds, so build the habit of signaling early — it tells everyone around you what's coming.

  10. How close to a fire hydrant may you legally park?

    Show answer & why

B — 15 feet. Parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant is illegal — fire crews need that space to work. (Other distances worth memorizing: 20 feet from a crosswalk at an intersection, 30 feet from a stop sign or traffic signal.)

  11. Diamond-shaped yellow signs are used to:

A blank yellow diamond-shaped traffic sign
    Show answer & why

D — Warning signs. Yellow diamonds warn: curves, merges, pedestrian crossings, signals ahead. (Construction warnings use the same diamond shape but in orange; regulatory signs — the ones that state the law — are white rectangles.)

  12. A pennant-shaped sign (a sideways triangle) marks:

A blank yellow pennant-shaped sign, a long triangle on its side
    Show answer & why

A — No passing zone. The yellow pennant sits on the left side of the road and marks the start of a no-passing zone. Shape questions are exam favorites because each shape has exactly one meaning.

  13. A round yellow sign ahead of you means:

A blank round yellow traffic sign
    Show answer & why

B — Railroad crossing ahead. The round shape is reserved for railroad advance-warning signs. Slow down, look, listen, and be ready to stop — trains can't.

  14. An emergency vehicle approaches with lights and siren on. You should:

    Show answer & why

C — Pull to the edge and stop. Move to the closest edge of the roadway, clear of any intersection, and stop until the emergency vehicle passes. Never block an intersection — and never stop in the middle of one.

  15. Florida's Move Over Law: on a two-lane road, a police car or tow truck is stopped ahead with its lights flashing. You must:

    Show answer & why

B — Slow to 20 below the limit. Florida’s Move Over Law is F.S. 316.126. On a two-lane road, slow to 20 mph below the posted limit (and to 5 mph if the limit is 20 or less). On a multi-lane road, move over a full lane away when you can do so safely — that's the law's name.

  16. Florida law requires your headlights to be on:

    Show answer & why

D — Night, plus rain, smoke, or fog. Headlights are required between sunset and sunrise and any time it's raining, smoky, or foggy — day or night. Easy rule of thumb: wipers on, headlights on.

  17. The rear of your car starts to skid sideways on a wet road. You should:

    Show answer & why

B — Ease off and steer where you want to go. Take your foot off the gas, keep it off the brake, and steer smoothly in the direction you want the front of the car to travel. Slamming the brakes in a skid usually makes it worse.

  18. Your right wheels drop off the edge of the pavement. The safest response is to:

    Show answer & why

C — Slow first, steer back gently. Don't yank the wheel — that's how cars overcorrect into oncoming traffic or roll. Ease off the gas, grip firmly, slow down, then steer back onto the pavement when it's safe.

  19. When entering a roundabout, you must:

    Show answer & why

A — Yield to traffic in the circle. Vehicles already in the roundabout have the right-of-way. Slow on approach, yield to circulating traffic (and pedestrians in the crosswalk), then enter when there's a safe gap. Traffic moves counterclockwise.

  20. During the first three months with a Florida learner's license, you may drive:

    Show answer & why

B — Daylight only. For the first three months, a learner's license holder may drive in daylight hours only; after that, until 10 p.m. Either way, a licensed driver 21 or older must always occupy the front passenger seat.

Questions, in the order people ask them

Florida permit practice test — frequently asked questions

Is this practice test really free?

Yes — completely. No account, no email address, no credit card. And you can retake it as many times as you want. We administer the official Florida Class E Knowledge Exam, so when practice helps you walk in prepared, everybody wins.

Are these the actual Florida permit test questions?

No — and be wary of any site claiming otherwise. The real exam draws from a secure state bank of roughly 800 questions. Our practice questions are written from the Official Florida Driver's Handbook. That's the same source material the real exam is built on. So the topics and wording style match what you'll see.

Is this the same as a Florida DMV practice test?

Yes. Florida's licensing agency is the FLHSMV. Many people still say DMV, and they mean the same exam. The test you take for a learner's permit is the Class E Knowledge Exam. This practice test covers the same handbook material, so it works for that too.

How many questions are on the real Florida permit test?

The official Class E Knowledge Exam has 50 multiple-choice questions covering traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving. You need 40 correct (80%) to pass. You have 60 minutes, with a 3-minute limit per question.

Can I take the real permit test online?

If you're 14½–17, yes. Florida lets you take the official exam online through an authorized third party administrator like Highway Traffic School. A parent or guardian proctors the session. Drivers 18 and older must test in person at a driver license or tax collector office.

What score should I get here before taking the real exam?

Aim for at least 16 of 20 — that's the same 80% the real exam requires. If you're passing here comfortably and consistently, you're in good shape for the official 50 questions.

Is the Florida permit test hard?

It rewards study more than common sense. Around 4 in 10 first-time test takers don't pass on their first try. Most misses come from skipping the handbook. Read it once, run this practice test a few times, and the real exam should feel familiar.

What should I study for the permit test?

The Official Florida Driver's Handbook — every exam question traces back to it. Enroll in the official exam with Highway Traffic School, and we include the handbook, 100 practice questions, and road sign flashcards.

Is the permit test available in Spanish?

No. As of , Florida administers all driver license knowledge exams in English only. That's true at every provider and license office statewide. The Florida Driver's Handbook is still published in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole. Learn the material in your preferred language. Then use practice questions like these to get comfortable with the English wording. The full English-only rule, explained.

Do adults need a course before the permit test?

Yes. Getting your first license at 18 or older? Florida requires the 4-hour TLSAE drug and alcohol course before your license can be issued. You'll take the knowledge exam itself in person at a driver license or tax collector office. (Under 18, the requirement is the 6-hour DETS course instead.)

Practiced enough? Make it count.
