Idaho Speeding Tickets  ·  The Real Cost

What does an Idaho speeding ticket actually cost?

At the window: $90.00 for 1–15 mph over, $155.00 for 16 or more. That’s the fixed penalty plus court costs, set statewide by the Idaho Supreme Court’s schedule. It’s identical in every county, and not something a judge can trim. Then comes the part the sticker doesn’t show: 3 or 4 points on a record that follows you for years. Idaho lets you remove 3 of those points with an approved course. That’s the one number you control.

The fine is fixed. The points are the variable — and the recoverable part.

Amounts per the Idaho Supreme Court’s infraction penalty schedule (effective July 1, 2025)

Each total is the fixed penalty plus $56.50 in court costs. A judge can’t trim it. The green line is the part you control.

The schedule, verbatim

How much is a speeding ticket fine in Idaho?

Speeding, 1–15 mph over the limit $33.50 fixed penalty + $56.50 court costs
$90.00
Speeding in a construction zone (any speed) $50.00 fixed penalty + $56.50 court costs
$106.50
Speeding, 16+ mph over the limit $98.50 fixed penalty + $56.50 court costs
$155.00
Speeding in a school zone $100.00 fixed penalty + $56.50 court costs
$156.50
What each speeding tier costs at the window, to scale. Each total is a fixed penalty plus $56.50 in court costs, and it is the same in every Idaho county. Idaho's infraction rules do not let a court withhold judgment or suspend the penalty. So none of these bars can be negotiated down. Idaho Supreme Court infraction penalty schedule verified

Contesting the citation is a separate right, and it is about whether you committed the infraction, not about the amount. This page is about what paying costs.

The part the sticker hides

Why is the record the bigger bill?

3yrs
your standard Idaho driving record covers the most current 3 years — a conviction rides it the whole way
$7
what it costs anyone you authorize — insurers included — to pull that record
12pts
in any 12 months = a 30-day suspension — three 16-over tickets in a year gets you there
Speeding, 1–15 mph over the limit The default for most everyday speeding tickets
3 points
Speeding in a school zone Cheaper on the record than in dollars
3 points
Speeding, 16+ mph over the limit Three of these in 12 months reaches the 12-point suspension line
4 points
Speeding in a construction zone (any speed) Any work-zone speeding is 4, however far over you were
4 points
What the course takes back A flat 3 off your count for an ITD-approved course, once every 3 years — points, never the conviction
−3 points
The same four citations, measured on the record instead of at the window. Ordinary speeding and a school zone are 3 points. 16 or more over, or anywhere in a work zone, is 4. The green bar is the part you control. An ITD-approved defensive driving course takes a flat 3 points off your count, once every 3 years. IDAPA 39.02.71 verified

We won’t guess what your insurer does with a conviction — that’s their math. The suspension math, though, is published: the full point schedule and rolling windows.

The part you can change

You can’t shrink the fine. You can remove 3 points.

Required first

Pay the citation

Idaho requires the citation to be paid before a course completion counts. So the fine is paid either way. No class makes an Idaho ticket free, and no course removes the conviction. What a course can do is take 3 points off your count.

Take the 6-hour ITD-approved course

100% online, with an open-book exam and unlimited free retakes. Your certificate is issued the moment you finish. Email it to ITD at ddc@itd.idaho.gov, and a flat 3 points come off your count, once every 3 years. Not sure how? See the Idaho certificate guide.

The fine print

What the 3-point reduction can’t do

It lowers your point count. The conviction stays on your record. It can’t undo a suspension ITD has already imposed. If you have zero points, there is nothing to remove, and you can’t save it for a future ticket. It does not help with a CDL disqualification. Take it while your count still matters.

ITD’s own phrasing on the other upside is “and/or an insurance discount.” That’s insurer-dependent, so call yours before counting on it. We never promise what insurers decide.

Idaho speeding ticket FAQ

How much is a speeding ticket in Idaho?

For ordinary speeding, one of two numbers, set statewide by the Idaho Supreme Court's penalty schedule. It's $90.00 total for 1-15 mph over the limit, or $155.00 total for 16 mph or more over. (Each is the fixed penalty plus $56.50 in court costs.) Zones change the math: $106.50 in a construction zone and $156.50 in a school zone. The amounts are the same in every Idaho county, and a judge can't lower them.

Can the judge reduce or suspend the fine?

Not for an infraction. Idaho's infraction rules set judgment at the fixed penalty plus court costs. They also prohibit withheld judgments and suspended penalties. That's why the schedule reads like a price list: it is one. (Contesting the citation is a different question. That's your right — and it's about whether you committed the infraction, not about the amount.)

Which costs more — the fine or what follows it?

The fine is the number you can see; the record is the one that follows you. A speeding conviction joins your Idaho driving record. (The standard record covers the most current 3 years.) Anyone you authorize — an insurer among them — can pull that record for $7. We won't pretend to know your premium.

Can a course dismiss my Idaho speeding ticket?

No. Idaho law provides no statewide court traffic-school dismissal program. The only program written into the law is the city Traffic Safety Course (Idaho Code 50-336). Some cities offer it when the ticket is written. Even then, you pay the fixed penalty and the conviction stays on your record. What a course can do in Idaho is remove points.

If the fine is fixed, isn't the course just one more cost?

It's the one cost on this page that buys a change. The citation's penalty is set — pay it and nothing about it moves. The course is $19.95 flat, and that is the whole number: no processing fee, no certificate fee, nothing added at checkout. What it buys is the only adjustable line in the story — a flat 3 points off your count. You're not paying twice for the same thing; you're paying the schedule for the ticket and us for the points.

Two tickets from one stop — do I pay both fines?

Yes. Each citation has its own amount on the schedule. A 16-over ticket plus a lane violation is $155.00 plus that violation's own total. Points work differently: only the violation with the higher point value counts. The Idaho points guide explains that rule.

Does a work-zone ticket really cost less than a school-zone one?

In dollars, yes — $106.50 vs. $156.50 on the current schedule. But the work-zone ticket hits the record harder. Any work-zone speeding is 4 points, while a school-zone ticket is 3. It's a good illustration of the page's whole argument: the sticker and the record cost are different bills.

The fine’s spent. The points don’t have to be.

Six hours online, $19.95 flat, and 3 points off your Idaho record. The fine is the number you can’t argue with. This is the one you can still change.
