Send your Idaho defensive driving certificate to the ITD — a two-minute job

In Idaho, you deliver your defensive driving certificate to the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD). The ITD publishes one way to do it: you email it. So here is the whole job. You get the ITD’s email address and a message already written for you. You also get what to do if a court or officer sent you.

One email to ddc@itd.idaho.gov with the PDF attached — that’s it.

Show me the steps ↓

Channel and rules per the ITD’s own driver records guide. Not finished yet? The Idaho course page has the whole deal.

Before you finish the course

Do you pay the citation first? Yes, the ITD checks.

The ITD approves the 3-point reduction only when your citations were paid before you completed the course.

That is the ITD’s rule, in its own words. Still mid-course with an unpaid ticket? Pay it, then finish. Already finished with it unpaid? Pay it now, then ask ITD Driver Services whether the reduction can still apply — that’s their call, and we won’t guess at it for you. Two more things the ITD states plainly: the certificate is recognized for Idaho-licensed drivers only, and the payoff is a 3-point reduction and/or an insurance discount — the discount belongs to your insurer, so ask them.

The full point system — schedule, suspension windows, the minus-3 fine print — lives in the Idaho eligibility & points guide. What the ticket itself costs, fine by fine: Idaho speeding ticket cost.

The two-minute job

Three steps. One of them is “attach a file.”

  1. Copy these three lines — and add your date of birth Your name, Idaho driver's license number and certificate number are printed on the certificate. Your date of birth is not. Together, those four help the ITD match the certificate to your record. The message below has all four lines ready.
  2. Check this date before you send The ITD approves the 3-point reduction only when your citations were paid before you completed the course, and this is the date it checks. Finished with a ticket still unpaid? Pay it, then ask ITD Driver Services — that call is theirs.
  3. Attach the PDF and send it — nothing to print or sign One email to ddc@itd.idaho.gov with the PDF attached. Keep the sent message: it is your proof of the date you submitted, and the ITD publishes no turnaround time, so we will not invent one.
Your certificate of completion, and the two minutes that turn it into three points off. It arrives as a PDF attached to your completion email. Put four things in that email — full name, date of birth, Idaho driver's license number and certificate number. They help the ITD match the certificate to your record. Three of them are printed here: the certificate carries no date of birth, so that is the one line you fill in from memory. The ITD publishes a single channel for these: "Defensive Driving Course certificates of completion can be emailed to ddc@itd.idaho.gov." ITD driver records guide verified

Fill in the four blank lines, attach the PDF, send. Email is the only route the ITD publishes. If you can’t email, mail a printed copy to Driver Services’ general address: Attn: Driver Services, Idaho Transportation Department, PO Box 7129, Boise, ID 83707-1129.

Sent here by someone else?

Where does the certificate go: court, officer, or insurer?

Who sent you to this course?

  • If Nobody — you are here for the points
The ITD, and only the ITD Email the PDF to ddc@itd.idaho.gov with your four identifying lines. That is the whole job, and the steps above are it. The two-minute version →
  • If A court ordered it, or an officer offered it
Your court first — then the ITD Deliver it to the court named on your citation, by that court's deadline and however it asked; its instructions rule. Then send it to the ITD yourself for the points, or ask the clerk whether they will.
  • If Your insurer suggested it
Your insurer sets the terms Ask first whether they honor an ITD-approved course, then send it the way they ask. We never promise a discount. The points are still yours to claim, so email the ITD as well.
One certificate, three possible destinations, and who sent you decides which. Idaho law has no statewide program that drops a ticket for taking a course. So what a court path wins is whatever that court offered. The points are a separate errand with the ITD, and the insurance discount belongs to your insurer. The ITD's own wording is a 3-point reduction "and/or an insurance discount". It recognizes traffic class completion certificates for Idaho-licensed drivers only. ITD driver records guide verified

Certificate submission FAQ

Do you send my certificate to the ITD for me?

No — in Idaho, you deliver it yourself. The ITD publishes one way to do it: you email it. Your certificate is free and instant, it's attached to your completion email, and sending it to the ITD is one email: attach the PDF, send it to ddc@itd.idaho.gov, done.

Where exactly do I send it?

Email it to ddc@itd.idaho.gov — that's the channel the Idaho Transportation Department publishes for defensive driving certificates. Email is the only route the ITD publishes. If you cannot email, mail a printed copy to ITD Driver Services. Keep a copy for yourself. This is the main Driver Services mailing address, not a special desk for certificates. [Then the address on its own line, unchanged: Attn: Driver Services, Idaho Transportation Department, PO Box 7129, Boise, ID 83707-1129]

Do I have to print it?

Not for the ITD. Attach the PDF to your email and send it. Print a copy only if a court asked you to bring paper, or you'd like one for your records — the download is free, as many times as you want.

What should the email say?

Your full name, date of birth, Idaho driver's license number, and your certificate number — with the certificate attached. That's what lets the ITD match the certificate to your record. The pre-written email on this page has those lines ready to fill in.

I finished the course before paying my ticket. Is that a problem?

The ITD's rule is that citations must be paid before you complete the course for the 3-point reduction to be approved. Pay the citation now, then ask ITD Driver Services whether the reduction can still apply to your record. That's their call, and we won't guess at it for you.

How long until the 3 points come off?

The ITD doesn't publish a turnaround time, so we won't invent one. Keep your sent email as proof of the date you submitted. Your Idaho driving record is available from the ITD; if the reduction hasn't appeared after a few weeks, reply to your own sent message and ask.

Can I use the course more than once?

Idaho allows one 3-point reduction every three years. The clock starts on the date you finished your last course. If you used it in the last three years, the ITD will not apply a second reduction.

A court or officer sent me. Is the ITD still the right place?

Follow the court first. If a court or officer offered the course, deliver your certificate to the court named on your citation by the court's deadline — its instructions rule. Then ask the clerk whether they also want it sent to the ITD for the point reduction, or send it to ddc@itd.idaho.gov yourself. Both take minutes.

What about an insurance discount?

That belongs to your insurer, not Idaho — the state's own framing is a point reduction "and/or" an insurance discount. Call your insurance company, ask whether they give one for an approved defensive driving course, and send them the certificate the way they ask.

I can't find my certificate.

It's attached to your completion email as a PDF, and you can download a free copy any time by signing in to your account. There's no fee to download it again.

Does the certificate count if my license is from another state?

The ITD recognizes traffic class completion certificates for Idaho-licensed drivers only. If your license is from another state, the course can't reduce points on an Idaho record you don't have — check with your own state's licensing agency about what it accepts.
