How many points is a speeding ticket in Idaho?
A speeding ticket in Idaho is 3 points. It is 4 points if you were 16 or more over the limit, or speeding in a work zone. Any moving violation adds 1 to 4 points, and 12 points in a year suspends your license. Idaho also lets you take points off. Finish an ITD-approved defensive driving course and 3 points come off your count, once every 3 years. No letter to wait for. No judge to ask. Here is the whole system, fine print included.

How many points on your license before Idaho suspends it?
| Any window of | Points | Suspension |

| 24 months | 18 or more | 90 days |
| 36 months | 24 or more | 6 months |
Under 17, the rules bite sooner. The first conviction brings a written warning. Then come 30- and 60-day suspensions, with no restricted driving privileges. The standard Idaho record covers the most recent 3 years. Points simply age out of the windows above. Young driver sent to a course by a court or school? The way back down
Minus 3 points. Real rule, real fine print.
3 points off your count — once every 3 years.
Complete an ITD-approved defensive driving course and Idaho removes 3 points from your violation point count. The clock runs from your last course’s completion date. The fine print, told straight: it works on points you already have — no banking ahead. It removes points, not the conviction. It can’t undo a suspension already imposed, so take it before the letter, not after. Idaho’s rules are written for regular licenses; if you hold a CDL, check with the ITD before enrolling. Your tickets must be paid first. And you submit the certificate to the ITD yourself — a two-minute step we walk you through.

Points questions, answered
Idaho eligibility & points FAQ
How many points is a speeding ticket in Idaho?
Three, for most speeding tickets. It's 4 if you were 16 or more over the limit, or in a work zone at any speed over. Idaho's schedule runs 1 to 4 points per moving violation. Three is the default for most everyday tickets: inattentive driving, failure to yield, school-zone violations, improper turns.
Can I really remove points from my Idaho record?
Yes. It is written into Idaho's own rule, IDAPA 39.02.71.400. Complete an ITD-approved defensive driving course and 3 points come off your violation point count. You can use it once every 3 years, measured from the date you completed your last course. It is a flat 3-point removal, not "up to."
What's the catch on the 3-point reduction?
Five honest ones. It removes points already on your count — you can't bank it in advance with a clean record. It removes points, not the conviction itself. It can't undo a suspension that's already been imposed, so timing matters. It doesn't help any CDL disqualification. And it shares one 3-year limit with the city Traffic Safety Course — one or the other, not both.
Am I eligible to take the course for point reduction?
Almost every Idaho driver is. There's no letter to wait for and no court to petition. Two requirements. Your citations must be paid before you complete the course. And you can't have used the reduction (or a city Traffic Safety Course) in the past 3 years. Idaho's rules are written for regular licenses; if you hold a CDL, check with the ITD before enrolling.
How many points before Idaho suspends my license?
Twelve or more points in any 12-month period brings a 30-day suspension. Eighteen or more in 24 months is 90 days. Twenty-four or more in 36 months is 6 months. The state's driver's manual also describes a warning letter at 8–11 points in a year. That's the last exit before the suspension math.
What are Idaho's 4-point violations?
Speeding 16+ over, any work-zone speeding, passing a stopped school bus, racing, railroad-crossing violations, and the hit-and-run property-damage duties. At 4 points each, three of these inside a year puts you at the 12-point suspension line.
I got two tickets from one stop. Do both count?
No. When two violations come out of the same incident, Idaho counts only the one with the higher point value. (And a first-offense distracted-driving ticket carries no points at all. The second one is 3.)
What's the city Traffic Safety Course — is that this course?
It's a separate, narrower thing. Some Idaho cities offer a Traffic Safety Course at the moment a citation is issued. The fee is capped at $25, you finish within 45 days, and you still pay the ticket's fixed penalty. Completing it keeps the points off and the violation out of your insurance rating. But the citation is not dismissed. It also uses up the same once-per-3-years slot as the point-reduction course.
Does taking the course get me an insurance discount too?
Maybe. The state's own framing is a point reduction "and/or" an insurance discount. That's because the discount belongs to your insurer, not Idaho. Call your insurance company and ask. Don't count on a discount until your insurer confirms it.
When should I take the course — before or after a suspension notice?
Before, every time. The reduction can't rescind a suspension that's already been imposed. The state's own guidance is to take the class before you're suspended. If your point count is creeping toward 12, take the course now — not after the letter arrives.
How long do violations stay on my Idaho record?
The standard Idaho driver's license record covers the most current 3 years. (A lifetime record is available on request.) Points stop counting toward suspension as they age out of the rolling 12-, 24-, and 36-month windows. The reduction course just gets you there 3 points faster.
