Alive at 25 vs. Defensive Driving  ·  The Honest Router

Alive at 25 in Idaho — or defensive driving?

Two Idaho programs, one endless mix-up. Alive at 25 is the National Safety Council’s class for young drivers. Idaho has run it since 2009, and it’s often the specific program a court or school names. Idaho defensive driving is the 6-hour, ITD-approved course a licensed driver takes after a ticket. It removes 3 points, it’s fully online, and it’s exactly what we sell. What brought you here decides which one you need.

Alive at 25 FAQ

What is Alive at 25 in Idaho?

A National Safety Council class for young drivers — NSC builds it for ages 15 to 24. Idaho has run it under the Idaho Transportation Department's highway-safety umbrella since 2009. It's a short, highly interactive session aimed at crash prevention for the age group that crashes most. (The Idaho program site describes about four and a half hours.) People arrive three ways: voluntarily, through their school, or because a traffic court or state agency sent them.

Is Alive at 25 the same as Idaho defensive driving?

No — and the confusion is exactly why this page exists. Alive at 25 is a young-driver safety program, taught by an instructor on a set date. Most attend because a court, school, or parent decided they should. An Idaho defensive driving course is what a licensed driver of any age takes after a ticket. The goal: 3 points removed from their record. Ours is ITD-approved for that — 6 hours, fully online. Different programs, different jobs, different people.

The court sent me to Alive at 25. Can I take your course instead?

No — complete the program the court named. A court order isn't a category; it's a specific program. Substituting a different course (ours included) risks non-compliance with the order. Find your session through the program's site, aliveat25.us. If no scheduled session works for you, that's a conversation with the court, not with a website.

Does Alive at 25 take points off my record?

Idaho's 3-point reduction requires an ITD-approved accident prevention course. Whether a particular Alive at 25 session qualifies is a question for the provider or ITD. Ask before you enroll. We won't guess at another program's approvals. What we can say plainly: our 6-hour online course is ITD-approved for the 3-point reduction. You can use it once every 3 years.

Can I take Alive at 25 online?

Sometimes. The Idaho program is an instructor-led class on a set date. Its schedule lists sessions in person and live virtual sessions. Both are on aliveat25.us. If a court sent you, ask the court whether a virtual session counts. Want a self-paced online course after a ticket? That's not Alive at 25 — that's a defensive driving course. Ours is 100% online, self-paced, on any device.

I'm under 25 and just got a ticket. Which one do I need?

Unless a court or agency told you otherwise, the defensive driving course. Age isn't the deciding factor — the goal is. Pay the citation first; Idaho requires it before the course counts. Then complete the 6-hour ITD-approved course, and 3 points come off your count — once every 3 years. One honest caution for young drivers. If you were cited while under 17, Idaho's under-17 rules run on convictions, not points. (Warning, then 30- and 60-day suspensions.) The reduction doesn't rewind those.

Does either program dismiss the ticket?

No. Idaho law has no statewide court program that dismisses a ticket for taking a course. The one exception in state law is the city Traffic Safety Course. Even that does not dismiss the ticket. You still pay the fixed penalty, and the conviction stays on your record. Be careful with any site that promises Idaho ticket dismissal through a course.

What does the defensive driving course cost?

$19.95 flat. That covers the 6-hour ITD-approved course and the open-book exam with unlimited free retakes. Your certificate is issued the moment you finish. You send it to ITD (ddc@itd.idaho.gov) to claim the 3-point reduction. The page price is the checkout price, nothing added.

Where is Alive at 25 held in Idaho, and what does it cost?

Ask the program, not us. Alive at 25 is an instructor-led class on set dates, and its Idaho schedule — the cities, the dates, the live virtual sessions and how to register — is on the program's own site, aliveat25.us. The provider sets the fee, so that site or the provider is the place to check it. We don't run Alive at 25 and don't hold its seats. If a court sent you, book the session your order allows, and ask the court whether a virtual session counts.
