How do you get a Texas defensive driving insurance discount?
Many Texas auto insurers give a discount for finishing an approved defensive driving course. Each company decides whether it offers one, how much it is, and how long it lasts. So the first step is a phone call, not a course. Ask your insurer. Then take the 6-hour course online for $25 and send in your certificate.

The order that works
What are the three steps to a Texas insurance discount?
Ask your insurer first
Call the number on your policy or ask your agent. Find out if the company gives a discount for this course before you pay for it. The four questions below cover it.
Take the 6-hour course online
It is the Texas driving safety course, approved by the TDLR. Eleven short units, each with a two-question quiz you can retake free. There is no final exam. Stop and start when you like.
Send the certificate
We email your certificate the moment you finish. Send your insurer a copy the way it asked for it, and keep one for yourself.
Before you enroll
Which four questions should you ask your insurance company?
The Texas Department of Insurance lists a defensive driving class among the auto discounts to ask about (TDI, how to shop smart for auto insurance). It does not set an amount. Your company does. So ask:
- Do you give a discount for a TDLR-approved driving safety course taken online?
- How much is it, and which coverages does it apply to?
- How long does it last, and can I renew it by taking the course again?
- How do you want the certificate — email, app, or through my agent?
Write the answers down, with the name of the person you spoke to. We can’t promise what your insurer offers, and we never quote a discount amount.
The course
One course. $25. No ticket needed.
The same TDLR-approved course, taken on your own.
$25 is the lowest price Texas law allows any school to charge, and nothing is added at checkout. The course is 6 hours, 100% online, and works on a phone. Got a ticket instead? That is a different path, and it starts with your court: how Texas ticket dismissal works, and the six steps show the order the court expects.

Texas insurance discount FAQ
Does defensive driving lower insurance in Texas?
It can. Many Texas auto insurers give a discount for finishing an approved defensive driving course. The Texas Department of Insurance lists a defensive driving class among the discounts to ask about. But each company decides whether to offer it. So call yours first.
How much is the defensive driving insurance discount in Texas?
Your insurance company sets the amount. We do not quote a number, because it is not ours to promise. Ask your insurer how much it is and which coverages it applies to before you enroll.
How long does the discount last?
That is up to your insurer too. Some ask you to take the course again after a set time to keep the discount. Ask how long it lasts and put a reminder on your calendar.
Do I need a ticket to take the course?
No. You can take the Texas driving safety course on your own, any time. No court and no ticket are involved when you take it for your insurer.
Which course do I take for an insurance discount?
The same 6-hour Texas driving safety course on our course page. It is approved by the TDLR (License CP994), 100% online, and $25 total. Ask your insurer to confirm it accepts a TDLR-approved online course.
How do I send the certificate to my insurance company?
We email your certificate the moment you finish. Send your insurer a copy the way it asked for it. Most take a PDF by email, through an app, or through your agent. Keep a copy for yourself.
Can I use one course for a ticket and for insurance?
Ask both. Your court decides what it needs to dismiss a ticket. Your insurer decides what it accepts for a discount. We can't promise either one's answer.
Can everyone on my policy get the discount?
Ask your insurer how it handles more than one driver. A certificate names one person. So each driver who wants credit takes the course under their own name.
Called your insurer? The rest takes 6 hours.
$25 total — the lowest price Texas law allows, with nothing added at checkout. 100% online, instant certificate, free quiz retakes.
