TSS vs. Defensive Driving · The Honest Router
Arizona Traffic Survival School — or defensive driving?
Arizona runs two programs with names that sound alike. They are not interchangeable. Traffic Survival School (TSS) is ordered by the MVD after points pile up. It’s in person, and we don’t sell it. Defensive driving school (DDS) is different. You choose it yourself after one eligible ticket. It’s fully online — and it’s exactly what we do. What you’re holding decides which one you need.

What are you holding?
Holding both? They’re separate problems with separate fixes — TSS for MVD, defensive driving for the new ticket.

- TSS — in person, and not something we sell Only an ADOT-licensed school counts. You have 60 days from the date on the order. You can ask for a hearing within the first 15 days. - If Both — an MVD order and a fresh ticket
- Two separate problems, two separate fixes Finish TSS for the MVD. Then check the new ticket. If it is eligible, take defensive driving for it. For drivers without a CDL, its points never join your count. Doing one does nothing for the other.
Same word “school,” different worlds
TSS vs. DDS, side by side
| Dimension | Traffic Survival School | Defensive driving (DDS) |
|---|---|---|
| Who orders it | MVD orders it — an assignment letter, attendance mandatory | You choose it — instead of contesting or paying an eligible ticket |
| Who runs it | ADOT Motor Vehicle Division — licensed schools | The Arizona Supreme Court — certified schools |
| What it does | Satisfies the order and avoids the suspension. The points stay. | Dismisses the eligible citation — its points are never assessed |
| Format | Classroom. Online waiver once per lifetime, emergencies or proven burden only | Legitimately 100% online — ours included |
| The clock | 60 days from the assignment order (a hearing can be requested within 15) | At least 7 days before your court date |
| Removes points? | No — prevents a suspension | No — prevents the points from ever existing |
The shared myth: neither one removes points already on your record. They age out of the counting windows on their own. Point math and the 8-point threshold live in the Arizona points guide.
Why the letter comes
When MVD orders Traffic Survival School
The prevention play is upstream. Divert an eligible ticket through defensive driving while it’s fresh, and its points never join the count that triggers the letter.
TSS questions, answered
Traffic Survival School FAQ
What is Traffic Survival School in Arizona?
It's a classroom program the ADOT Motor Vehicle Division orders certain drivers to attend. The usual trigger is 8 or more points in 12 months. Some violations, like running a red light, trigger it on their own. TSS is licensed by MVD, and it's a requirement — not a choice. Completing it is how you avoid the license suspension that follows the order. It is not the same thing as a defensive driving course, and the two don't swap.
Can I take Traffic Survival School online?
Almost never. TSS is an in-person class. There is one exception: MVD can give you a waiver to take it online, once in your life. MVD gives it in two cases. One is a state of emergency declared by the Governor. The other is when you can show that going in person would be a real hardship. ADOT calls that a substantial burden. Ask MVD about the waiver before you pay for any online class. Without it, an online class won't count. Our own course is defensive driving. It is fully online, but it can't satisfy a TSS order.
What's the difference between Traffic Survival School and defensive driving school?
Who orders it, and what it does. TSS is ordered by MVD after the points are already on your record. You attend to keep your license. Defensive driving school (DDS) is a court diversion you choose yourself after a single eligible ticket. You attend so the citation is dismissed — and the points never happen. In ADOT's own words: Traffic Survival Schools are licensed by the ADOT Motor Vehicle Division and are separate from Defensive Driving Schools, which are administered through the Arizona Supreme Court.
When does MVD order Traffic Survival School?
There are two ways. The first is points: 8 to 12 points in any 12 months brings a TSS order. If you took TSS in the last 24 months, you get a 3-month suspension instead. The second is the conviction itself, whatever your points. That list is DUI, wrong-way driving, and running a red light or stop sign. It also covers aggressive driving and any moving violation that causes death or serious injury. A driver under 18 gets a TSS order for a first moving violation.
What happens if I don't complete TSS in time?
Suspension. You must finish TSS within 60 days after the date on the order. Miss that and your license is suspended for 6 months. If you think the order is wrong, you can ask for a hearing within 15 days of that date. Don't set the letter aside. The 60 days keep running.
Does Traffic Survival School remove points from my record?
No. Completing TSS satisfies the order and avoids the suspension — that's its whole job. The points you already have stay on your record. They simply age out of MVD's 12- and 36-month counting windows over time. No Arizona program removes points that are already assessed.
Can I take a defensive driving course to reduce my points instead?
No — Arizona's court program answers that flatly: defensive driving school cannot be used for point reduction. What DDS does is stronger but narrower. Choose it for a single eligible citation, and that citation is dismissed. Its points are never assessed at all. It's prevention, not cleanup. That's why the time to use it is when the ticket is fresh — not after the points land.
I got a TSS order AND a new ticket. What do I do?
Treat them separately, because they are. The TSS order is between you and MVD. Find an ADOT-licensed school and finish within your 60 days. The new ticket may qualify for defensive driving through the court. Two things decide that. The violation must be on the eligible list. And you can use the class only once every 12 months, counted from violation date to violation date. If the ticket qualifies, finish our course and the court dismisses it. Its points stay off your record if you don't hold a CDL. One program never stands in for the other.
Do you offer Traffic Survival School?
No. We're a defensive driving school, certified by the Arizona Supreme Court. TSS is a separate system that MVD licenses. If MVD ordered you to TSS, start at ADOT's TSS page. It links to the official school finder. If a court ticket is your problem, that's what our course is for.
