Texas Online Traffic School · The Walkthrough
How does defensive driving work in Texas?
Six steps. Two belong to the court, three are yours, and one is ours. The one drivers get wrong is the last hand-off. We file your completion with the state, but you deliver the certificate to your court. Plan for that from day one and the rest is easy.

Citation to dismissal
The six steps, start to finish
Respond to your citation
Request defensive driving by the appearance date printed on your ticket — usually a checkbox on the citation response, online or by mail. Don’t start the course yet.
The court says yes and sets your deadline
The court checks that you qualify and says yes. It also sets your deadline. Texas law allows 90 days. Your court prints the exact date on its order. Put it on your calendar that day. Your court also charges its own costs. The court sets that amount, not us. Your court also charges its own costs. The court sets that amount, not us.
Take the 6-hour course online
11 short units, two-question quizzes, unlimited free retakes, any device. Log in and out as often as you like — we save your spot.
Download your certificate instantly
It’s emailed and available to download the moment you finish — free, no processing wait, no delivery fee.
Sign it and deliver it to your court
Texas courts require you to get the signed certificate to them by your deadline. If it arrives late, the court may not count the course — this is the step to plan around. Texas law also asks for your driving record and a short sworn statement. Your court’s paperwork lists what it wants.
The court verifies your completion
We file your completion electronically with the TDLR within 48 hours so your court can verify the certificate. Texas law also has the court look at your driving record. Most courts ask you to bring a certified Type 3A record. You order it from the Texas DPS.
That one sentence is most of what goes wrong in Texas traffic school — now it can’t go wrong for you. Still deciding whether to ask the court at all? Read the full guide to Texas ticket dismissal → Taking the course for an insurance discount instead? That path skips the court entirely.
The clock, honestly
How long it all takes
- Day 0 Respond & ask Day 0 is the appearance date on your citation: you respond and request a driving safety course. Do not start the course until the court says yes.
- Day 90 Court's deadline The statute allows a 90-day period from your plea to complete the course and present the certificate. Your court prints its own date on the order — that is the one to beat.
- The 6-hour course is open this whole window — 11 units, any pace, certificate the moment you finish (day 0–90)
The course is never the bottleneck — the court steps are. Respond to your citation early and the rest is an easy week.

How-it-works FAQ
How does Texas online traffic school work?
Six steps. Request defensive driving when you respond to your citation. Get the court's permission and deadline. Take the 6-hour course online. Download your certificate instantly. Sign it and deliver it to your court. Then the court verifies your completion against the record we file with the TDLR. Our price is $25. Texas law sets that minimum, and we add nothing at checkout. Your court charges its own costs on top, and that amount varies by court.
How long does the course take, and do I have to do it in one sitting?
6 hours, the length Texas law requires, split into 11 short units. Log in and out as often as you like; we save your spot. Spread it over a few evenings if that suits you. You still finish well inside the 90-day window.
What if I can't finish before my court's deadline?
Call your court before the deadline passes — the number is on your citation. Whether to extend is entirely the court's call. Courts are far more flexible before a deadline than after one.
You know exactly how it works. Now knock it out.
$25 for the course — the lowest price Texas law allows, with nothing added at checkout. 6 hours online, instant certificate, guaranteed pass — unlimited free retakes.
