California 4-Hour TVS Operator Renewal Course — renew without sitting the DMV exam.
On a renewal, the DMV takes this 4-hour certificate in place of its 35-question written exam. Finish today. Download your certificate the moment you pass, and upload it with your renewal. Renew before your license expires. The DMV accepts no renewal after that date.
- Takes the place of the DMV's 35-question written exam on renewal.
- Certificate the moment you pass, valid one year from completion.
- No fingerprints and no Live Scan on a renewal.
- On the DMV's approved list (rev. 08/24)
- DMV name: “4 Hour Training for Licensed Operators”
- 4 hours — the DMV's length, nothing added
Right course?
Is this the right course for you?
The DMV checks every one of these when you file. We would rather check now than refund you later.
Which program does the DMV want from you?
-
- If my operator license is current and I am renewing before it expires
-
This course — the 4-hour renewal program.
- 4 hours
- $89.95
- takes the place of the DMV exam
-
- If this is my first license, or my license has expired
- The 8-hour licensing course. The DMV treats an expired license as a new application: the 8-hour program, Live Scan and the written exam. Go to the 8-hour course →
-
- If I am adding a license for another school I already operate
- Maybe no course at all. The DMV waives the program for the extra license if you finished one in the last 12 months. The schools need a common owner and the same business address.
- I own the school and I am its operator → the same program. You renew the operator endorsement on the owner's form, with no extra operator fee.
- I am renewing an instructor license → not these courses. Instructors renew with an 18-hour program every three years.
- Suspended or revoked? Ask DMV Occupational Licensing before you buy: (877) 563-5213.
Your expiration date
When does your operator license expire?
The date is on your operator license. Enter it and we will do the math.
Traffic Violator School Operator License
No license handy? A renewal license runs one year from the day it is issued. A first license expires on the same day as the owner's license, so it can be shorter. Renew before it expires. The regulation, 13 CCR 345.20, has no grace period and no late fee.
The exam you do not have to sit
What the 4-hour certificate takes the place of
The 4-hour program is a required part of every renewal, and the DMV accepts its certificate “in lieu of passing the TVS Operator Examination.” Here is the exam it replaces, so you know what you are not doing.
- The 4-hour course
- Online, any device. Log in and out as you like.
- Four hours of course time, the length the DMV sets.
- 25-question final, open book, unlimited retakes.
- Nowhere to go. Take it any time in the 12 months before you file.
- Certificate the moment you pass. It is your continuing education for the year.
- The DMV written exam it replaces
- 35 questions; 30 correct to pass.
- Given at a DMV field investigation office.
- Three attempts, at least one week apart.
- $16 exam fee, paid to the DMV.
- A first-time applicant who fails three times starts a new application.
Exam waiver: 13 CCR 345.03(a)(2)(A); DMV exam format: 13 CCR 345.04(h)(6); fee: 13 CCR 345.00(c)(3). Verified October 2026.
How it works
Renewing, step by step
Seven steps. Three are ours, four are the DMV's. Print the list and tick it off.
-
01
Find your expiration date. You
It is on your license. A renewal license runs one year. A first license expires with the school owner's. Renew before that date. The DMV does not accept a renewal after it.
-
02
Take the 4-hour course, any time in the year before you file. You
Online, at your own pace, on any device. Log in and out as you like. You will enter your California driver license number twice, because the certificate must carry it. The course cannot be shorter than 4 hours. That is the DMV's rule, not ours.
-
03
Pass the open-book final. You
25 questions. You may look back at the course material. 70% passes. If you do not pass, take it again as often as you need, at no extra cost. That is our policy, not a DMV rule.
-
04
Download your certificate. Highway
It is ready the moment you pass. Check your name and license number on it. It is valid for one year from the completion date.
-
05
Sign in to MyDMV and open Occupational Licensing. You
The DMV takes renewals online. Its renewal form is OL 756. It asks for your license number, your school's TVS license number, and whether you have had a conviction since your last license. Your school confirms that it still employs you. Owner-operators renew the endorsement on the owner's form, OL 45A.
-
06
Upload the certificate and pay the DMV's fee. You
$75, plus the $1 Family Support Program fee, paid to the DMV. Owner-operators pay no extra operator fee. We file nothing for you, so nothing waits on us.
-
07
Done. Keep your certificate. Highway
We keep a record of your completion for three years. Nothing else to send. A renewal needs no Live Scan and no written exam.
Steps from 13 CCR §§ 345.20(b)–(c) and 345.76, OL 45A, and the DMV's operator-license page, verified October 2026. The DMV says all applicants apply online. If you cannot, it still accepts a paper packet by mail to Department of Motor Vehicles, Occupational Licensing Section, PO Box 932342 MS L224, Sacramento, CA 94232-3420. You pay the postage.

Questions, in the order operators ask them
4-hour renewal course FAQ
Does this course let me skip the DMV written exam?
Yes, on a renewal. The DMV accepts the 4-hour certificate "in lieu of passing the TVS Operator Examination." That is what the course is for. The 4-hour program is a required part of every renewal. You still file the renewal and pay the DMV's fee.
When do I have to renew by?
Before your license expires. A renewal license runs one year. A first license expires with the school owner's license, so it can be shorter. The DMV does not accept a renewal after the expiration date. There is no grace period and no late fee in the rules.
What happens if I miss the expiration date?
The DMV treats you as a new applicant. That means the 8-hour program, Live Scan, the written exam and the original fees. If the lapse is three years or less, you do not need a new fingerprint card. The 8-hour course is here.
How early can I take the course?
Any time in the year before you file. Your certificate is valid for one year from the day you complete the course. The rules set no earliest filing date for a renewal, only the expiration date as the last one.
How long does the course take? Can I finish today?
Four hours, the length the DMV sets. You can finish in one sitting. You can also log out and come back; your place is saved.
What is the final exam like, and what if I do not pass?
25 questions, open book. You may look back at the course material. 70% passes. If you do not pass, take it again as often as you need, at no extra cost. That is our policy, not a DMV rule.
What does the DMV charge to renew?
$75, plus a $1 Family Support Program fee, paid to the DMV. That is as of October 2026; the DMV sets its own fees. If you are the owner and the operator, you renew on the owner's form and pay no extra operator fee.
Do you send my certificate to the DMV?
No. You download it the moment you pass and upload it with your own renewal. We keep a record for three years, as the DMV requires. Nothing is filed by us, so there is nothing to wait on.
Where do I upload the certificate?
In your MyDMV account, under Occupational Licensing. The DMV says every occupational-license applicant must apply online. The paper renewal form is OL 756. If you cannot use the portal, the DMV still accepts a paper packet by mail to its Occupational Licensing Section in Sacramento, and you pay the postage. Renewal help: (916) 229-3126.
Do I need Live Scan fingerprints to renew?
No. Fingerprints are for original applications only. A current licensee does not need a new fingerprint card.
What does the certificate show, and how long is it valid?
Your full name, date of birth and California driver license number; the completion date; "4-hour" and "Internet"; our name, phone and address; a signature; and a unique ID. It is valid for one year from the completion date.
Do I need a California driver license to take the course?
Yes. The DMV requires it, and your license must be current and valid during the training. We ask you to enter the number twice, and it is masked on screen. A California ID card does not count.
How do I check that this course is DMV-approved?
Open the DMV's list of approved TVS operator education programs. The DMV's operator-license page links it. Highway Traffic School is listed for the 4-hour online program. California issues no certification number for these programs; the list is the proof.
Can I take it on my phone?
Yes. Phone, tablet or computer, in a current version of Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari. Progress saves as you go, so you can switch devices.
I own the school. Do I need this course?
If you are also the operator, yes. An owner may act as operator without a separate operator license, but must still meet the operator requirements, including the program. You renew the operator endorsement on the owner's form, OL 45A, with the 4-hour certificate attached and no extra operator fee.
What does the course cover?
The ten topics the DMV requires of every approved program, in a shorter form than the 8-hour course, with a focus on new laws and rules. The list is in "What's in the course" above.
Can I read the course again after I finish?
Yes, for 30 days after you complete it, from your account.
Can I get a printed copy of my certificate?
Your download is free, as many times as you like, and that certificate is what the DMV asks for. If you want a printed certificate mailed to you, it is $9.95 plus postage, from your account.
What if I change my mind?
Our refund terms are on the refund policy page.
Renew before that date. Four hours, and you upload it.
Your certificate the moment you pass. The DMV accepts no renewal after your expiration date.
