How does the Florida Basic Driver Improvement online course work?

Step 1

Before you sign up

You must notify the Clerk of the Court in the county where you received your ticket that you want to attend traffic school, and you must pay an election fee to the Clerk of the Court within 30 days of receiving your violation.

4 Hours to Complete

The Florida Basic Driver Improvement course will take 4-hours to complete, per DHSMV requirements.

Step 2

Register and take your course

You will have immediately access to your online course once you complete registration and payment. Take the class at your own pace. You can take as many breaks as you want - sign in and out as often as you like. The system will keep track of your progress. You must complete the traffic school within 90 days, unless otherwise directed by the court.

Step 3

Pass your test

You must pass the 40-question exam with 80% or greater. To help you pass, we allow unlimited attempts of the exam without any extra cost to you. You are 100% guaranteed to pass.

Step 4

Leave the rest to us

When you successfully pass the exam, we will submit your certificate of completion electronically to the Florida DHSMV within 72 hours of completing your course.

If taking this course is ordered by the court as punishment, you will need to appear in court and show your completion certificate to the clerk. Otherwise, the DHSMV will process your completion and send it to the appropriate court, if needed.

Am I eligible to take Florida traffic school online for my ticket?

You must elect to attend a Basic Driver Improvement course within 30 days of receiving your ticket by notifying the Clerk of the Court where you received your ticket. You must also pay an election fee to the court. You can do this by visiting the Florida Clerk's website.

General Information & Eligibility

Do all courts in Florida approve your course?

Not yet. We are currently certified and licensed by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to offer our course only in the County of Miami-Dade for ticket dismissal and court-ordered reasons. If you received a letter from the DHSMV, you could take our course for any county in Florida.

What is a Traffic Collision Avoidance Course (TCAC)?

A Traffic Collision Avoidance Course is the same thing as a Basic Driver Improvement course. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles requires that you attend to retain a valid driver's license status if you:

  • Were involved in a crash, were found at fault, and
    • Someone was transported to the hospital, or
    • Have had two crashes in two years, which resulted in property damage over $500.
  • Passed a stopped school bus.
  • Were a participant in highway racing.
  • Were a spectator of highway racing.
  • Were cited for reckless driving.
  • Ran a red light.
How do I know if I am eligible to attend Florida traffic school?

Any person who receives a non-criminal moving violation ticket can elect to attend a Florida Basic Driver Improvement course instead of points being added to their driving record, as long as the violation was not for:

  • Exceeding the speed limit by 30 MPH or more
  • Carrying a vehicle's certificate of registration while the car is in use
  • Driving a motor vehicle with expired registration
  • Driving a motor vehicle with an expired driver's license of six months or less
  • Driving a motor vehicle without carrying a driver's license

Commercial driver's license or commercial learner's permit holders are not eligible for BDI regardless of whether they were driving a commercial vehicle. Also, anyone cited while operating a commercial vehicle is not eligible.

You may attend Florida traffic school course only once every 12 months and no more than five times during your lifetime.

How often can I take a Basic Driver Improvement course?

According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, you can attend a Basic Driver Improvement course only once every 12 months and no more than five times during a lifetime.

If you got a ticket and elected to attend a BDI course:

  • No court appearance is required.
  • You can save 18% on your traffic citation fine.
  • Points will not be added to your driving record.
  • Adjudication of guilt is withheld.
  • Safe driver status is maintained.
  • Insurance rates would not go up unless you were involved in a crash where you were found at fault.
I want to attend a Florida BDI course. What do I need to do?

If you wish to elect Basic Driver Improvement instead of having points added to your driving record, you must:

  • Inform the Clerk of the Court in the county where you received your ticket and pay the civil penalty within 30 days of the violation. You can do this by going to the Florida Clerks website. Select your county from the bottom left corner of the page and then click "Pay Traffic Tickets Online."
  • You must inform the court and elect to attend traffic school before registering.
  • Complete your Basic Driver Improvement course within 90 days of paying your civil penalty. This may vary from court to court. If you are unsure, check with the Clerk of the Court where you received your citation.
How soon can I start the Basic Driver Improvement course?

Once you register with Highway Traffic School, you can begin your BDI course immediately. You need to make sure you have paid your fees to the court and have elected to attend traffic school before registering and taking the course.

How long does it take to complete the Florida traffic school course?

The Basic Driver Improvement course will take approximately 4-hours to complete. Florida state law requires that all BDI courses are a minimum of 4-hours in length.

You can start and stop as often as you like. Our system will remember where you left off, so you can take the course at your leisure. There is no need to complete the course all at once unless you want to.

What is the full price for the Florida 4-hour BDI Course?

Our 4-hour BDI Course is only $6.99. There are no additional charges, and you will not see any other hidden fees. Your certificate of completion is included in this price. You may download a free copy of the certificate of your records immediately after completing the course. There is no added processing fee. $6.99 is the final total price.

What happens if I don't pass the final exam?

Most students pass the final exam the first time. The exam consists of 40 questions, and a passing score is 80%. If you don't pass the final exam the first time, you can retake the final exam an unlimited number of times. You can always go back and review material during or after the exam.

Do you send my certificate directly to the DHSMV?

Yes. We automatically submit your completion report to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles when you pass the final exam. It may take up to 48 hours for the completion to be listed on your driving record.

The DHSMV automatically sends your completion to the court for ticket dismissal cases. You will need to appear in court for court-ordered courses and show your completion certificate to the clerk.

How fast will my certificate of completion be processed?

Once you complete your course, your certificate is available immediately. We automatically submit your completion report to the DHSMV when you pass the final exam.

Please note: It may take up to 48 hours for the completion to be listed on your driving record.

How do I get a duplicate copy of my certificate of completion?

You can download, print, or save a copy of your certificate of completion directly from our website, for no additional charge, and it is available immediately once you pass the final exam.

If you need a certified copy of your certificate of completion, you can purchase one during registration or from your course history page.
